Mary Bassett, MD, MPH

Dr. Bassett was appointed the Commissioner of Health of New York City in January 2014. Her focus is on ensuring that every neighborhood in the city supports the health of its residents, with the goal of closing gaps in population health across this diverse area. Originally from NYC, Dr. Bassett lived for nearly 20 years in Zimbabwe, where she served on the medical faculty of the University of Zimbabwe. Previously, she was a Program Director for the African Health Initiative and the Child Well-Being Program at the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. She also served as an Associate Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.

Dr. Bassett holds a BA from Harvard University and an MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She completed her medical residency at Harlem Hospital Center, and earned her MPH from the University of Washington.
